Free Russia's Breadbasket

SIR: Why does it seem that everyone is acknowledging and applauding the independence of the Baltic States, including Mr Yeltsin, but not doing the same with quite as much enthusiasm for the Ukraine?
Why is everyone considering the consequences to Russia (and the treaty which Russia wants the Ukraine to sign) of the Ukraine's bid for freedom?
Too bad if Russia (also recently independent, let's not forget) and the proposed new union need the resources of the Ukraine - the breadbasket of what was the old union, and good luck to the Ukraine that it has these |
Long live an independent non-communist Ukraine | Now |
